Paul Debevec is one of the most recognized researchers in the field of CG today. LA ACM SIGGRAPH’s “fireside chat” with Paul and Carolyn Giardina, of the Hollywood Reporter, will allow us a glimpse at the person behind all the innovative scientific work. This event promises to be one of our most popular as Paul always draws a crowd and is constantly in demand to speak at conferences around the world. This program is a virtual event. You must Register and pay with Zoom to attend.
Paul Debevec's leading-edge work is well-known in the field of VFX where he's been involved with many ground-breaking films such as: The Matrix series, Spider-Man, and Avatar. He has been recognized with many awards such as, being named one of the world's top 100 young innovators under the age of 35 by MIT's Technology Review magazine (2002), and the Special Award for a Distinguished Professional Career in Animation/VFX from the MundosDigitales Festival (2005Coruna, Spain). In 2010 he received a Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Techniques from Debevec’s research, such as HDRI and Image-Based Lighting, are commonplace in CG work today. His Light Stage processes have been employed by Sony Pictures Imageworks, WETA Digital, and Digital Domain to create photoreal digital actors in many films including: Spider-Man 2 and 3, Superman Returns, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Avatar, The Avengers, Oblivion, Ender's Game, Gravity, and Maleficent.
In 2008 his high resolution facial scanning process was used to produce one of the first digital facial performances to cross the "Uncanny Valley", as well as, Digital Ira, one of the earliest photoreal real-time digital characters.
His newest Light Stage X4 (nicknamed Solaris), created at Google, is designed to allow full-body, time-based moving volumetric capture.
